Many consider the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as one of the most important emerging parts of the world economy in the 21st century. MENA is strategically vital as it produces the majority of the world’s oil. However, despite the region’s oil, most MENA countries score lower on Human Development Index (HDI) world ranking, with GDP, productivity and investment rates well below the global average. It is, therefore, becoming widely accepted that the dominant economic model of the region – based on the public sector, oil incomes and workers’ remittances – is not up to the challenges of modern globalisation and the needs of advanced knowledge-based societies.

Biography
Keith Perks has an MBA from Manchester Business School and a PhD in International Marketing from Loughborough University. He researches in the fields of international marketing, international entrepreneurship and CSR communications and has published his work in the International Business Review, Journal of Business Research and Strategic Change among others. He has presented his research at leading management and marketing conferences, including, for example, the US Academy of Management, Strategic Management Society, British Academy of Management, European Academy of Marketing, Australian and New Zealand Academy of Marketing, the European Group for Organization Studies and the European Business Ethics Network. He was awarded the Best Paper in the International and Cross Cultural Marketing Track at the Australian and New Zealand Marketing Academy Conference and was the Chair of the 37th European Marketing Academy Conference. Prior to joining the University of Brighton he was the European Business and Planning Manager at Fleetguard (a division of the Cummins Engine Group) and European Marketing and Business Development Manager for a high technology SME. He has delivered research seminars by invitation at HEC Montreal; Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane and ESMT Management School in Berlin.
