Biography

Asma Elsony is a Respiratory Epidemiologist and Public Health expert, trained in Khartoum University Hospital, West Middlesex, and Llandough Hospital Penarth & later worked as a lecturer in Tropical Medicine with Professor Allan Woodruff on parasitic diseases, onchocerciasis, malaria and sleeping sickness. She held posts as Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader at the Juba University, the Board of Higher Specialization in Khartoum and a par timer at Khartoum University for a number of years. As the Director of the National Tuberculosis programme with teams, DOTS ALL OVER was announced on the 27th of January 2002. In that capacity, she is involved in providing technical assistance to National Tuberculosis Control programs in a number of countries. She has also worked as a consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO), the Norwegian Lung and Heart Association, the Norwegian Corporation Agency and many others in Asia Africa, Europe and the Middle East.Professor Elsony is the Former President of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (the Union) and currently works as a technical expert for several global including the Technical Review Panel (TRP) for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, WHO expert for Geneva and the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean, Health and Human Rights Activist. She is the founder and director of The Epidemiological Laboratory (Epi-Lab), a national public health research institute in Sudan. The Epi-Lab is built on maximizing opportunities and developing creative approaches to addressing challenges in resource limited environment. With its partners the Epi-Lab is holding a number of research projects , piloting, consolidating & expanding evidence based cost effective, strategies & interventions that guide policy change and ensure sustainability. Has published more than 50 papers and co authored chapters in 4 books.
