Many consider the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as one of the most important emerging parts of the world economy in the 21st century. MENA is strategically vital as it produces the majority of the world’s oil. However, despite the region’s oil, most MENA countries score lower on Human Development Index (HDI) world ranking, with GDP, productivity and investment rates well below the global average. It is, therefore, becoming widely accepted that the dominant economic model of the region – based on the public sector, oil incomes and workers’ remittances – is not up to the challenges of modern globalisation and the needs of advanced knowledge-based societies.

Biography

Ahmed Mohamed EL Hassan is currently an Emeritus Professor of pathology at the Institute of Endemic Diseases, University of Khartoum, which he initiated in 1993. He graduated from the Kitchener School of Medicine (now the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum). He holds fellowships from the Royal Society of Medicine, London, The Royal Society of Pathology, London, a PhD from the University of Edinburgh and honorary DSc from Ahfad University, Omdurman. He was previously Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Khartoum, and worked in the department of pathology at King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, mainly on endemic diseases and cancer.
