Many consider the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as one of the most important emerging parts of the world economy in the 21st century. MENA is strategically vital as it produces the majority of the world’s oil. However, despite the region’s oil, most MENA countries score lower on Human Development Index (HDI) world ranking, with GDP, productivity and investment rates well below the global average. It is, therefore, becoming widely accepted that the dominant economic model of the region – based on the public sector, oil incomes and workers’ remittances – is not up to the challenges of modern globalisation and the needs of advanced knowledge-based societies.

Biography
Mark is the Business School’s Reader in Organizational Change with all of his research, teaching scholarship and external engagement focusing upon this field. Research – Mark is the Deputy Director of the Centre for Research on Management and Employment (CROME). Mark is a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Change Management with his current research interests relating to historiographies of change, the leadership of change and the convergence of innovations, projects and change. He is currently supervising three doctoral students and has successfully supervised to completion. Teaching – Mark enjoys working with postgraduates and was a core member of the development team which established the MA Change Management in 1995 with this successful course developing into the current MSc (PgCert, PgDip) Managing Change and Innovation. Mark has also taught managing change on our different MBA routes over the past decade. Scholarship – Critical interpretation of what is already known is an integral aspect of any university level offering and Mark’s scholarship centres upon his textbook – Managing Change: A Critical Perspective. The textbook which was first published by the CIPD in 2006 resulted in a second edition being published in 2010. External Engagement – An increasingly important university agenda is our engagement with external clients and Mark has worked for many years on the facilitation of organizational change in the private, public and voluntary sectors. It is often these client relationships which enable the meaningful integration of research, teaching and scholarship around what we know about organizational change and what we still need to discover.
