The mission of the MEKEI research institute is to use research and education to help transform the countries of the Middle East and North Africa to advanced, knowledge-based societies led by sustainable innovation and social advance.
Many consider the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as one of the most important emerging parts of the world economy in the 21st century. MENA is strategically vital as it produces the majority of the world's oil. However, despite the region's oil, most MENA countries score lower on Human Development Index (HDI) world ranking, with GDP, productivity and investment rates well below the global average. It is, therefore, becoming widely accepted that the dominant economic model of the region - based on the public sector, oil incomes and workers' remittances - is not up to the challenges of modern globalisation and the needs of advanced knowledge-based societies. Given the apparently contradictory needs of economic growth and environmental conservation, it comes as no surprise that knowledge management, innovation and sustainable development (SD) have had such a powerful influence in contemporary discussions on the future of the region.

Biography

Dr. Elsadig Musa Ahmed is a Professor at Economics Unit and Coordinator for Post Graduate programs of the Faculty of Business and Law, Chair person of Center for Globalization and Sustainable Research (CGSR) Multimedia University (MMU), Melaka Campus, Malaysia, member of Research and Development and the Institute of Postgraduate Studies (IPS) Coordination Committee (ICC) MMU. He is the author of the book entitled (Green Productivity: Applications in Malaysia’s Manufacturing), 2008. He has published more than 40 papers in international refereed journals and presented several papers at conferences. He is currently teaching Advanced Research Methodology, Entrepreneurship and Economics for Managers at postgraduate level. International Economic History, International Political Economy, East Asian Economies, Knowledge-based Economy, Economic Integration and Regionalism, Research Methodology, Labour economics, Microeconomics and Macroeconomics at undergraduate level. He produced 3 PhD students and supervising number of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Master of Philosophy (MPhil) students. He is a member of World Assembly of Youth (WAY), Arab Science and Technology Foundation (ASTF), World Academy of Sciences, Engineering and technology (WASET), Scientific and Technical Committee on Humanities and Social Sciences and several associations. He is reviewer and an expert of the second Millennium Ecosystem Assessment report “Biodiversity and Human Well-being: A Synthesis Report for the Convention on Biological Diversity, 2005” He is reviewer for various international, regional and local Journals and conferences such as (Economic Modelling, Applied Economics, Journal of Information and Knowledge Management, World Review of Science, Technology and Sustainable Development, International Journal of Economic Policy Studies, The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability, Global Studies Journal and Journal of Mualamat and Islamic Finance Research). He is serving as associate editor of some volumes of The International Journal of Environmental, Cultural, Economic and Social Sustainability and Global Studies Journal, Bonito Publications and editorial board member of several journals Journals. He is a track chair of environment and development, Human Capital and development WASD conferences 2009 -2010 and ICT and Economic Growth, e-Case & e-Tech, 2010, international conference and member of international committee in 2011. He awarded the best paper award at XXth Conference of CEDIMS, Laval University, Quebec, Canada in November 2010, the academic staff excellent award of Multimedia University in December 2010 and the best senior researcher, Faculty of Business and Law, Gala awards, 2009. He selected for publication at Who’s Who in the world journal in 2011 in the field of economics. His research interests include productivity analysis, productivity and environment, development economics, economic growth and environment and knowledge-based economy.
