Reconnecting Higher Education to the discourse of inclusive sustainable knowledge-based economy in the Arab Region
The Keynote Seminar aims to critically discuss the future of higher education (HE) in the Arab countries towards achieving sustainable knowledge-based inclusive development in the region. The Keynote Seminar will therefore explore the role of academic and research institutions as recommended by the World Bank’s World Development Report 2016 to enable countries in the region reap the digital benefits form the global growth in the digital economy particularly for the country’s Digital Natives (Youth). Moreover the Keynote Seminar also aims to discuss a range of questions relating to strengthening the linkages between universities and research institutions as well as reconnecting these institutions to the knowledge-based economy (KE) discourse by exploring the role of HE institutions in transforming the Arab countries into knowledge-based economies. In doing so, a number of issues relating to the role and relevance of HE institutions to the contemporary discourse of Arab countries’ sustainable inclusive knowledge-based development will be examined such as: what is the role of Arab’s HE institutions in supporting and enhancing the process of economic and social development in the region?; what are the major obstacles that HE institutions face in Arab countries?; are there governmental components to these? if so what?; are there societal components to these? if so what?; and how can these obstacles best be overcome? The Keynote Seminar brings together senior and high level intellectual and practice-based contributors who will help develop a framework for the analysis of the role of Arab HE institutions in achieving sustainable inclusive knowledge-based development and help policy-makers to constructs an “ideal role” for HE institutions in Arab countries and outlines how performance can be evaluated in pursuit of the goals of KE.

SMART KM ensures that knowledge management becomes part of the organisational culture through the appropriate integration with number of organisation facets such as strategy, management systems, ICT and support services. SMART KM is a revolutionary model being driven by best-in-class KM practices from a number of industries in addition to well-founded theories. The framework contain number of business components which supports knowledge flow throughout the organisations which can be tailored to achieve the organisation specific goals and objectives in alignment with the adopted operating model. Throughout the seminar, number of key issues facing organisations in implementing KM initiatives will be introduced and you would also be able to realise the design principles supporting SMART KM and how it can be used to develop fit-for-purpose KM Framework.

International Best Practices of Business Incubators: The Roadmap for the Arab Countries
This presentation argues the case for more business incubators in the Arab countries to support diversifying their economies, the commercialization of new technologies, job creation and wealth building. In the presentation, the speakers will introduce their recent research project/book focusing on business incubators in developed and developing countries. The book describes and compares key indicators of incubation best practices worldwide to identify the strengths and weaknesses of business incubators models around the world. In doing so the research uses successful international case studies based on models in developed and developing countries. The data was mainly collected by survey, semi-structured interviews and organizational documents from each case study. Finally the presentation will provide a roadmap for the development of new economies based on technology, as well as value added in technology transfer, innovation development, and an entrepreneurial climate.

Strategic planning division at Al Ain Municipality (AAM) established on 2008 to develop strategic plans for AAM and ensure full alignment with Abu Dhabi Government strategy. This seminar will present a collective lessons learned session to share practical knowledge and experience on establishing a strategic planning unit in a government entity. The seminar will help new strategic planners in other government entities to overcome some obstacles they may face as well as help strategic planners in private sector to understand their government partners.

This workshop has been designed to introduce a variety of perspectives on knowledge management (KM) in the public and private sectors. The workshop aims to enable knowledge managers, analysts and decision makers to introduce fit-for-purpose KM Framework to their organisations. At the end of the course attendees should be able to acquire a comprehensive knowledge and practical experience about KM best-in-class methodology and technology in alignment with the local needs and capabilities. Moreover, after competition of the course, attendees to write a report, supported by the tutor, of what they have learnt and what is particularly relevant to their employers. A focus to be one aspect of the course which has implications for the way they will improve their professional practice when they return to their employers. This will help reassure the employers of the benefits of the programme and help consolidate the understanding of the manager.
